- Check your vehicle. Check your basic maintenance and have a full tank of gas. Some gas stations will be closed or close early on holidays and to trucks will be busy.
- Plan ahead. Know your route and make reservations if you plan to stop overnight.
- Check the weather before you hit the road.
- Use traffic apps to avoid congested areas. Do not try to use them while driving. Check before you get behind the wheel or have a passenger keep tabs on it for you.
- Avoid areas with special events, such as parades and concerts, unless you plan to attend.
- Stay off your phone while you drive. Let your friends and family know you will not be responding to calls, texts or messages while you are driving.
- Plan for driving sober, whether that means spending the night or planning ahead for a ride.
